ORONO – As investigators worked to piece together Monday what led to the stabbings of two men at a club a day earlier, one of the alleged victims was arraigned in court on a criminal trespass charge in connection with the incident.
One alleged victim, Diandre Arrington, 21, of Orono pleaded not guilty Monday in 3rd District Court in Bangor and was released on personal recognizance after his arraignment.
An Eastern Maine Medical Center spokeswoman in Bangor said Monday there was no information about the condition of the second victim, whom Arrington told police was his friend’s brother. The second victim is not identified in court documents.
Police said Sunday neither man’s stab wounds appeared life-threatening.
“We’re still in the middle of it,” Orono Police Capt. Gary Duquette said Monday when asked about the investigation.
“It’s going to take us some time to sort it out,” he added later.
That’s because information has been coming forward slowly, particularly in light of the fact that one key witness, Paul Donoghue, 19, of Boston collapsed during an asthma attack and was hospitalized. Donoghue was on a respirator Sunday night at EMMC. A hospital official on Monday said there was no information about his condition.
Orono police, stationed about 1 a.m. Sunday on Park Street across from the club, Ushuaia, observed a fight taking place and went to investigate. Two officers saw two or three people being chased by a group.
The officers, later assisted by several others, eventually found two men had been stabbed and others were bloodied in the melee.
Investigators are trying to talk with other witnesses and review evidence, but Duquette said that so far they haven’t gotten any solid information. Authorities will be reviewing surveillance video taken both inside the club and outside, and Duquette said a toxicology test of Donoghue was taken by the hospital.
Authorities recovered a small, black-handled, lock-blade knife found by a Ushuaia employee, although Duquette said they haven’t formally linked the knife to the stabbings.
Related to the incident but being investigated separately by the Maine State Police is what happened to Donoghue.
That investigation is largely over, and Orono police officers likely helped save the man, Detective Sgt. Stephen Pickering of the Maine State Police said Monday.
Donoghue was handcuffed and taken into police custody as police officers sought to contain the incident as other fights threatened to break out.
As Donoghue stood by an Orono police cruiser, his irregular breathing became worse, his legs became weak and he slumped over, Orono police Officer Mark Silk reported in a court document. The officer supported Donoghue’s weight as other officers removed the handcuffs from the man and laid him on the ground until ambulance medics arrived moments later.
Authorities charge that while officers were trying to get the unstable situation under control outside Ushuaia, Arrington refused to leave the club and instead yelled at police and taunted others, trying to coax them into a fight.
Arrington had blood on his shirt and jeans that he told police was from his friend’s brother’s stabbing. When Penobscot County Jail staff took his clothing as possible evidence, they discovered Arrington had a small knife wound to his left shoulder blade, according to court documents.
Arrington, a former University of Maine football player, said he was with friends attending graduation at the university and went to Ushuaia to celebrate, according to court documents. He told Orono police he was inside the bar when his friend’s brother was stabbed by a man wearing a Red Sox shirt and that he was then punched in the back.
“Arrington claimed not to know what started the altercation and stated that he did not know his assailant,” Silk indicated in his court affidavit.
Donoghue was wearing a Red Sox shirt and had blood on his face, as did a friend who claimed they had been assaulted inside the club, according to police reports.
The stabbing on Sunday occurred two months after another incident at Ushuaia in which two males also were stabbed. A Glenburn man was charged with aggravated assault.
