BANGOR ? Two days after allowing an early lead to slip away against Brewer, the Bangor High softball team wasn’t about to let it happen again.

In fact, the Rams couldn’t help but think about it as they again went up early on Hampden in Thursday afternoon’s game at the high school field.

“It was really going through my head,” said Tawyna Godinez, Bangor’s cleanup hitter. “I just felt like I definitely had to contribute in this game.”

Godinez did come through for Bangor, driving in three runs to go with Amy Hackett’s winning RBI single and a 3-hit relief effort from pitcher Kelly White in a 4-3 victory over Hampden Academy Thursday at the high school field.

It was a big win for 5-4 Bangor, which has had an up-and-down season so far.

“We know Hampden’s an awesome team so it’s a great game points-wise,” White said. “We’ve had so many close games, really tough losses, so this is a good one to kind of get us going.”

The 7-2 Broncos were coming into their fourth game in as many days, including Wednesday night’s 10-3 win over Brewer. They’ll get the weekend off, but the busy week has made for some tired players.

“It was a tough week for us and we were just exhausted mentally and physically,” Hampden coach Rodney Wells said. “We knew after the win against Brewer it was going to be tough. Bangor was ready to play and they took advantage of that.”

The Rams scored one run in the first, but Hampden scored three runs in the top of the third to gain the lead. Bangor responded in the bottom of the third when Godinez hit a two-run double to tie it, and then Hackett drove in Porter with two outs in the bottom of the fourth for the game-winning run.

Porter had singled and advanced to second on an Ilyse Angst groundout.

Hampden’s Erika Veinote, who took the loss despite scattering six hits, tripled and hit an RBI single in the third as Rams starter Amy Wadleigh began to struggle. Wadleigh gave up a leadoff walk to Myra Shannon, who advanced on an Emily Thompson sacrifice and scored on Nellie Woods’ double. Woods eventually scored on a Jenna Shue groundout. Michelle Wells singled and scored on Veinote’s single.

But White held the Broncs scoreless from there.

“I worked the corners as much as I could but the defense played well behind me,” White said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my infield and my outfield.”

Bangor’s defense had a huge seventh inning. Catcher Porter threw out a baserunner trying to steal second and the Rams forced out another runner at second. The game ended on a close call at first base, but Bangor first baseman Kate Turner held on for the final out.

Hackett singled twice, reached base a third time on an error and scored two runs.
