McLain, Thoms help Witches sweep

BREWER ? Katie Quimby singled to bring the game-winning run home in the top of the tenth to give the Witches a 4-3 in the first game and they took an easier route to victory with a 10-0 victory in the second to sweep a softball doubleheader with Old Town Thursday.

In the first game, Jordan McLain struck out 11 batters for Brewer. Christine Thoms doubled and singled to drive in two runs. McLain also had two singles and Bekka York had a double.

Liz Bergeron had 12 strikeouts for Old Town. Amanda Littlefield tripled and singled for one RBI.

In the second game, Thoms and Jessica O’Connell each singled and brought in two runs for the Witches. Sarah Risser singled twice for one RBI, while McLain and Kate Hanlon had a single and a triple apiece.

Allison Gallant, Shaylee Moulten and Heather Kasserman each had one single for the Indians.

At Foxcroft, Patrice Cianchette struck out 10, allowing four hits and walking four as the Warriors held off the Ponies. Michelle Barden singled twice, doubled once and scored three runs for visiting Nokomis. Ashley Bragdon had an RBI double and Alyssa Bragdon had a triple. Coral Goggin had an RBI single for Foxcroft Academy.

At Howland, Brooke Harris scattered five hits as the Pandas held off the Howlers.

At Millinocket, Jordan Burleigh pitched a complete game and drove home four runs as the Minutemen earned their sixth straight victory.

Houlton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Burleigh hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning as the Minutemen took a 3-1 lead. Ryan Bouchard hit a two-run single an inning later as Stearns scored four more runs to push their lead to 7-1.

Burleigh finished with two hits and four RBIs, while Bouchard and Matt Wark each had two singles and two RBIs.

Burleigh struck out 10 while improving his pitching record to 3-0.

At Jonesport, Timothy Holmes singled three times and doubled once to drive in three runs for the Royals.

Tory Dearborn led the Patriots, singling three times to drive in four runs. Phil Dougherty had two singles and a double for three RBI, while Justin Phinney had three singles and a double for two RBI.

At Greenville, Sam Carter allowed seven hits in five innings and Isaiah Eagles hit a three-run triple and an RBI single to lead the Bobcats to victory.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor Wednesday night, George Keefe had three singles to help lead a 15-hit attack by the John Bapst Crusaders.

Mike Tardiff had a double and a single for Bapst. Alex Yates, Brian Roach and Hunter Umphrey each singled twice.

For the Red Devils, Kurt Smith hit two singles.

Buckfield sweeps Greenville

At Greenville Wednesday, Buckfield took advantage of 10 Greenville errors to knock off the host Lakers 10-3 in the first game and15-1 in the second.

In the first game, Emery Dillon led the way with a triple, double and one RBI for the Bucks. Justin Dodge had a two-run triple.

Corey Woodbury had an RBI double and a single for Greenville. Joe Jardine hit two singles. Eric Driscoll hit a double to pace the Lakers in the second game.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Logan Forest threw a two-hitter with 5 strikeouts and four walks and helped himself with an RBI double as the Ponies cruised.

Josh Pelletier sparked Foxcroft with five RBIs on a three-run homer, a double and a single. Jon Catell hit a double and a single to go with one RBI, while Dave White singled twice and Nick Lancisi doubled.

Eric Boillard had an RBI single for the Warriors of Newport.

At Bar Harbor, Matt Grover’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Mike Hamlin for the winning run, capping a 7-run rally for the Trojans.

Brady Hurd led the Hawks with three RBIs on a double and two singles. Dustin Jalburt doubled, singled and added two RBIs while Josh Kane hit two singles for two RBIs.

Brewer, Old Town split

At Heddericg Field in Brewer, the host Witches opened up Thursday’s doubleheader impressively with an 11-0 win, but the Indians rallied in the second to post an 8-7 victory.

In the first game, Evan Economy pitched a two-hitter while walking two batters, striking out three, and hitting one. Brandon Hardy had three singles and an RBI. Corey Cushing had two singles and three RBIs while Ricky Adams had two singles and two walks.

Singles by Nathan Lonko and Sagner Storm were Old Town’s only hits.

In the second game, Chad Dupuis led off the sixth with a walk, moved to second on a bunt, and scored the game-tying run on Chris Brewer’s single. A walk later, Brewer scored on a fielding error.

Brewer finished with two singles and a double for the Indians. Jarrett Lucas hit two doubles.

Kevin McAvoy and Hardy each had two singles and two RBIs for the Witches.

At Ellsworth, junior righthander Cory Smith pitched a six-hitter and aided his own cause with a double, two singles and three RBIs to lead the Eagles by the Tigers of East Sullivan.

Mike Smith chipped in with a double, two singles and two RBIs for the winners and Andy Berry added three singles.

Jerry Burditt notched three singles for Sumner and Chris Cowperthwaite had a two-run single.
