Capsized boat report in Brewer turns out to be false alarm

Brewer firefighters were alerted to an overturned boat in the Penobscot River on Friday morning, but no rescue was needed as a fire official said the old boat had been there for some time.

Low tide exposed the boat that was tied down and stuck upside down in the mud, Lt. Mike Mullen of the Brewer Fire Department said Friday afternoon. The call about the overturned boat came in shortly before 10 a.m. and firefighters found it near Hardy Street, across from the fire station.

A 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee reported stolen from a Bangor car shop Tuesday remained missing as of Friday.

A man and a woman came into the Oak Street Bangor Car Care on Monday and were given car keys to two vehicles, including the green Jeep they expressed an interest in. They were asked to return the keys when they were done, according to the police report.

Later, as the dealership was closing for the day, an employee found one set of keys, but the vehicle was locked and the keys were missing, the employee told Bangor police Officer Myron Warner. The SUV was gone the next morning.

An employee of Bangor Car Care told Warner he had seen the man come in before. He described the man as 6 feet tall and 170 pounds with medium-length dark hair.

Lt. Steve Hunt of the Bangor Police Department said Friday that the Jeep had not been recovered yet.
