The University of Maine’s Kathryn Souviney scored 4,686 points in the heptathlon to earn sixth place at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Princeton, N.J., Saturday as several Maine college track and field teams traveled to meets across the region this weekend.

The University of Maine women scored 10 points to finish 22nd out of 34 teams at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of New Hampshire. Clarissa Michalak had a throw of 47.23 in the hammer to take fourth place and Lindsay Burlock clocked a 59.12 in the 400 meters for sixth place. The Black Bear men racked up nine points to finish 22nd of 36 teams. The 4×800 relay team finished second with a time of 7:38.20. At the ECAC/IC4A meet, Hana Pelletier ran the 800 meters in 2:13.22 for 14th place.

The University of Southern Maine women scored 12 points to finish in a tie for 18th at the New England meet. Kristen Sinclair had the top finish for the Huskies with a throw of 40.27 meters in the javelin, good for fourth place. Donna Cowing followed in fifth with a throw of 39.51.

The Colby College women’s team scored 10.5 points to place 21st. Karina Johnson paced the White Mules of Waterville with a second place in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:05.34. The Colby men did not score.

Softball

UMF falls in NCAA tourney

At Babson Park, Mass., No. 6 UMaine-Farmington committed five errors and fell victim to Robyn Savitsky’s 14 strikeouts as No. 1 Endicott earned a 6-5 win on Saturday in the elimination bracket of an NCAA Division III regional game, ending UMF’s season. UMF fell to No. 3 Keene State 3-1 in Friday’s game.

In Saturday’s game, Endicott’s Elyse Colby singled and scored on UMF’s fourth error of the game to provide the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh. Brandi Rideout had an RBI double for the Beavers, Mary Berry tripled and Holly Tripp had an RBI single, all in the fifth inning.

In Friday’s game, Sarah Campbell and Jennifer Norman hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fifth to lift the Owls. Rideout singled in the fifth and scored on a Kelly McDonough single. Stephanie Moriarty earned the loss despite scattering seven hits.

Brady, Bennis make all-tourney team

University of Maine players Jess Brady and Sarah Bennis were named to the America East softball championship all-tournament team Saturday.

Jackman native Brady went 3-for-9 with three singles and three stolen bases. Pownal’s Bennis pitched all 20 2/3 innings of Maine’s 1-0 and 3-0 losses to BU and Stony Brook, respectively. She had a combined 24 strikeouts while allowing 11 hits, four runs (three earned) and walking two.

Albany won the league title with a 4-0 win over Stony Brook Saturday. The Great Danes will face Northwestern at South Bend, Ind. on Friday.

Bass declares for NBA draft

BATON ROUGE, La. ? Sophomore Brandon Bass, the Southeastern Conference player and scholar-athlete of the year, has applied for the NBA draft and cannot return to LSU.

Bass announced the decision Friday. After being selected the SEC freshman of the year, he declared for the draft but later withdrew his name. A player can only do that once and return to college.
