Volunteers needed for Hampden honor roll project

The next meeting of the Hampden Veterans Honor Roll Committee is 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the municipal building in Hampden, according to Allison Berube.

Efforts are under way to erect the honor roll that will list the name of any Hampden resident who served during a time of conflict in support and defense of our country.

Anyone who knows of such an individual should call Don Muth at 862-4481.

Berube wrote that at its April meeting, the committee was “presented a bronze eagle that was designed by local sculptor Forest Hart ? which was spared the tragedy of the recent fire” that leveled the Hart home and studio in Monroe, destroying much of his life’s work.

Replicas of the sculpture will be sold to raise funds for this project. If you want to buy one, call Berube at 942-1890.

The next fund-raiser for this committee will be door-to-door canvassing beginning Saturday, May 28, in Hampden, and volunteers are needed for this project. Call Berube if you can help.

Volunteers also are needed for research and information gathering. If you are interested in this aspect of the project, call Dick Newcomb at 862-3633.

Fans of former Bangor television personality, news anchor and journalist Patsy Wiggins and fans of the late Washington Post sports journalist Shirley Povich might like to travel south to attend “i’monair,” the live version of the television program that shares “stories of extraordinary ordinary people.”

That is the explanation Wiggins gave for a new project she and Kathleen Alfiero, a public speaker and substance abuse counselor, originated that seeks out and shares interesting life stories.

During “i’monair” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the St. Lawrence Community Center in Portland, author Lynn Povich will share stories about her life and career.

She recently wrote and published “All Those Mornings-At the Post” about her father, who was a Post sports columnist for 75 years.

Lynn Povich was the first woman senior editor of Newsweek magazine.

Tickets for the event are $20, and information can be obtained by calling 799-4544.
