BANGOR – A 17-year-old from Bangor arrested over the weekend for allegedly stabbing another youth is expected to make an initial appearance today in 3rd District Court.
The youth was charged on Saturday by Bangor police with attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault, and he was being held at Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston, Detective Sgt. Paul Kenison of the Bangor Police Department said Monday afternoon.
A detention hearing for the youth was expected to occur today, although a prosecutor could not comment on such a hearing, citing the confidentiality of juvenile proceedings.
“Juvenile proceedings are not public until felony charges have been brought, and that has not happened in this case as yet,” Penobscot County Deputy District Attorney Mike Roberts said Monday afternoon. Although Bangor police arrested the youth on felony charges, formal charges had not been filed in court as of late Monday afternoon, he said.
The 16-year-old Bangor boy who was stabbed in the abdomen was listed in stable condition Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, according to Kenison, who was in contact with the hospital Monday afternoon. The names of both teenagers were not being released as they are minors, according to police and prosecutors.
The incident occurred at an Essex Street residence early Saturday morning, and the two teenagers knew each other from a previous confrontation, Kenison said.
“Apparently there was some sort of physical confrontation between the same two individuals a couple months prior, here in the city,” Kenison said.
Citing an ongoing investigation, the detective would not comment on what caused the animosity to flare up early Saturday morning.
Police and medics were called to Essex Street about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and found the stabbing victim.
Through interviews, investigators located the suspect hiding inside a friend’s apartment on Center Street later Saturday, Kenison said.
The weapon used in the stabbing has not been found yet, and Kenison declined to say what was used, saying the incident still is under investigation. An Essex Street resident reported the stabbing, but Kenison declined to say how many people may have seen the incident.
“I can’t get into the specifics,” Kenison said.
