SKOWHEGAN – Reagan Merrill and Stanley Whitaker agreed last fall that if the Red Sox won the World Series, they were destined to be with each other.
The pair will take that idea to extremes on June 4 when they get married in a Red Sox theme wedding at scenic Coburn Park.
Bridesmaids will be dressed in red, and ushers will be in Red Sox jerseys. The rings will be presented in a catcher’s mitt, the musical accompaniment will be “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and Merrill and Whitaker will take their wedding vows at home plate.
Merrill and Whitaker, who met five years ago, live in Massachusetts, but her parents live in Solon.
Merrill said her cousin – a New York Yankee fan, no less – hatched the idea of a wedding with a Red Sox theme.
“I kind of laughed it off,” Merrill said. “I didn’t really think he was serious. And then I talked to Stan, and he thought it was funny, too. We started talking about it, and we realized there would be nothing more appropriate.”
Of course, you have to be a serious Red Sox fan to hold such a wedding.
Whitaker certainly fits the bill. His phone answering machine has this message: “If you are a Yankee fan, please delete this number from your phone, and don’t ever call again.”
Merrill has been known to go to Red Sox spring training games in Florida, and found the excitement of last year’s World Series victory over the Cardinals hard to beat.
“I don’t think I slept all that week,” Merrill said.
For the wedding, the bridesmaids will carry white bouquets with red accents so they look like baseballs. Antique baseball bats, used by Merrill’s great-grandfather, will be crossed along the aisles.
The wedding cake will have a high-heeled sneaker, baseball cleats, mini leather gloves, balls and bats. John Fogarty’s baseball song, “Centerfield,” will greet guests, who will munch on ballpark food at the reception.
