ISLESBORO – The horticulture program at Islesboro Central School has been awarded a pair of grants to help cover the cost of drilling a well at the school’s orchard and garden plot.

The program received a $2,000 grant from the New England Grassroots Environment Fund and a $1,000 grant from the Harvest Fund of Maine Initiatives.

John Pincince, horticulture teacher at Mid-Coast School of Technology, who also runs the program on Islesboro, is working with a group of island residents and students to develop what is now officially called “The Orchard: A Local Harvest Sustainable Living Project.”

The goal of the project is to provide organically grown fruits and vegetables for the school’s lunch program and to eventually supply some of the food needs of the community.
