CUSHING – A 7.5-mile police chase that began in Rockland on Wednesday night ended with a crash on Route 97 and a handful of charges against the driver.
Seth Simmons, 21, of Friendship and his 17-year-old female passenger were taken by Warren Ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport with minor injuries, according to Maine State Police Trooper Patrick Hood on Thursday.
Simmons was later charged with operating while under the influence of alcohol, eluding an officer, failure to stop for an officer and operating after suspension. The passenger was not charged.
Speeds reached more than 90 mph during the pursuit, which started near the Park Street Grille in Rockland. It moved down Main Street onto Museum Street around 10:30 p.m.
Hood reported he was about to stop the vehicle for suspected operating under the influence. When he turned his blue lights on, the vehicle would not stop.
Driving a 1992 Saab 9000, Simmons continued down Route 1 through Rockland, Thomaston and Warren, then down Route 97 into Cushing near the Bolduc Correctional Facility.
Near the corrections center’s ball field, Simmons lost control on a curve. His Saab flipped and landed in the middle of the road.
Simmons made his initial appearance Thursday in 6th District Court, where his bail was set at $1,000 cash. Bail conditions include no contact with the female passenger and no use or possession of alcohol or drugs, according to a court clerk.
Simmons was still being held at Knox County Jail, a corrections officer said Thursday afternoon.
