Legislation to limit licenses, IDs advances

AUGUSTA – A bill seeking to prevent undocumented illegal aliens from getting Maine driver’s licenses and identification cards continued its path toward passage in the Legislature on Friday.

The Senate endorsed a bill, LD 763, to prohibit the issuance of a Maine driver’s license or non-driver identification card to anyone who does not have a valid Social Security number.

The bill would put into law what the current policy is at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, said Deputy Secretary of State Doug Dunbar.

Exceptions would be allowed for applicants who provide written proof showing why they are ineligible to receive Social Security numbers.

The bill was reviewed by the Transportation Committee, whose majority recommended its rejection. It faces final House and Senate votes.
