Registration must be made by Wednesday, June 1, for anyone who wants to be trained as an English As A Second Language volunteer tutor for Literacy Volunteers of Bangor.

The 18-hour training schedule is 9 a.m. to noon Monday, June 6; Friday, June 10; Saturday, June 11; Monday, June 13; and Friday, June 17, at United Technologies Center on Hogan Road in Bangor.

Course materials are $20, reports Literacy Volunteers of Bangor executive director Mary Marin Lyon, and scholarships are available for those who cannot afford the fee.

The group needs volunteers “in order to serve the request … for non-English speaking students,” Lyon wrote of the training that “focuses on how to teach someone the English language along with learning about American customs and culture.”

If you can help, or need a tutor, call Literacy Volunteers of Bangor, 947-8451.

Lyon reports that the deadline is the same (Wednesday, June 1) for those willing to become Basic Literacy Tutor Training volunteers, who will help adults learn to read or to improve their reading.

Lyon stressed that Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is particularly seeking volunteer tutors for the Newport, Dexter and Milo areas.

The tutor training is 9 a.m.-noon Monday, June 6; Wednesday, June 8; Monday, June 13; and Wednesday, June 15, at UTC in Bangor.

Course materials are also $20, and scholarships are available.

If you can help, or want to improve your reading, call the number above.

Bourgon requests that anyone with information about these women call her at 469-2705; Denise Morneault Gehman, 825-4445; or Susan Page Habeeb, 862-5925.

The American Cancer Society is offering adult Maine residents afflicted with cancer, and their families, two opportunities to participate in We Can Weekend, a weekend retreat that offers quality time for families to deal with these changes in their lives.

The first We Can Weekend is June 3-5 at Rivier College in Nashua, N.H., and the second is June 10-12 at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.

And the fee?

It’s fantastic: just $35 per family, for the weekend, including all meals and lodging and, better still, financial assistance is available.
