MACHIAS – The first of the public outreach meetings to discuss the 10-year strategic plan for recovery of Atlantic salmon statewide is scheduled between 6:30 and 9 tonight at the University of Maine at Machias.

The plan describes broad recommendations that the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission intends to implement over the next 10 years for recovery of Atlantic salmon statewide.

The plan’s elements include a paradigm shift, public and private partnerships, outreach and community engagement, assessment, monitoring and research and regulatory and governance roles.

A second meeting to discuss the plan with the public will be held Thursday, June 2, in Augusta. That takes place between 6:30 and 9 p.m. at the Jewett Hall auditorium at the University of Maine at Augusta.

The meetings are not public hearings, nor are they part of a formal public comment period. The meetings are informational only. For information, call Kathleen Brosnan, secretary of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, at 287-9972.
