The Maine Senate has enacted a bill, sponsored by Sen. Lynn Bromley, D-Cumberland, that will provide Maine consumers with one more tool in the challenge of protecting their personal credit information from identity theft. Under the bill, credit reporting agencies would be required to let Maine consumers put a freeze on their credit information. Consumers can lift the freeze as they need to by entering a personal identification number with the credit bureau. Three other states, including California, have passed similar legislation. If Gov. John Baldacci signs the bill, it would take effect in February 2006.
