Bangor High School medal winners

BANGOR – Norris Nickerson, principal of Bangor High School, has announced the four Charles E. French Medal winners. Graduation will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at the Bangor Auditorium with tickets required.

Benjamin Healey Weissman, son of Sally Healey and Ira Weissman of Dedham, will attend the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in the fall.

He is a National Merit Scholar, served as business editor for the yearbook, is a key club officer, an editor of the literary magazine and a captain of the indoor track team. He has been a member of the math team, the junior engineering technical society, the science bowl team and the academic decathlon. He is involved with Children’s International Summer Villages, serving on the board and traveling abroad several times and is also an active member of his synagogue’s youth group.

Weissman received the superintendent’s award, the Williams College Book award and departmental awards in French. He was the top scorer in the state on the MEAs during his junior year.

Kaitlin Dirrig, daughter of Lucia Dirrig and Marshall Maglothin, will attend Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. in the fall.

She has been involved in student government and athletics, having been a member of class council for three years and served as class treasurer. She has been a member of student council for the past three years and now is student council president. She is a member of the National Honor Society, math team and has been a HOBY delegate. In 2004, she was selected to be a MERITS intern and completed a full-time, seven-week internship in a biochemistry lab at the University of Maine in Orono.

Dirrig ran indoor track for four years and spring track for two years, having received six varsity letters. She placed third in the state in the 55-meter dash, has been the Eastern Maine Champion in the same event for four consecutive years and has won eight first-team awards. Her honors include the superintendent’s award, sophomore award of academic excellence and the science department award. She has been named an AP scholar with honor.

Jue Wang, son of Binke and Qin Wang of Bangor, originally of Shaanxi, China, will be attending Harvard University in the fall.

He is one of the founding members of the Eutyuls ultimate Frisbee team at Bangor High, as well as reporter for the National Honor Society. He has been involved with the math team, yo-yo club, a patron of the arts, a devotee to the sciences and involved with the science bowl, academic decathlon and junior engineering technical society competitions. He takes violin lessons and volunteers his time to mentoring a child from Down East Elementary School.

Wang is fluent in English, French and Mandarin. He has received the superintendent’s award, departmental awards in math and foreign language and third place at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

Elizabeth Burroughs-Heineman, daughter of Frederick Heineman and Christine Burroughs, will attend McGill University to study English.

She was captain of this year’s speech team, co-literary editor of Bangor High’s literacy magazine, Mosaic and a member of the school newspaper staff. She participates in Students Ending Environmental Destruction, AIDS committee, National Honor Society and math team. She takes dance classes and interns with Penobscot Theatre.
