ELLSWORTH – Late-inning heroics led to back-to-back 8-7 victories and helped the Ellsworth Eagles sweep a baseball doubleheader against Caribou Saturday.

In the second game, Nick Hunnewell earned his first victory by entering the game in the fourth and pitching 4 1/3 innings of three-hit, one-run ball. He also drove home the game-winning run with a one-out RBI single to left, scoring Mike Smith from second in the seventh.

Smith and Hunnewell each had two singles.

Arick Jepson and Jon Noyes each hit two singles for the visiting Vikings. Anthony Adams hit a two-run double.

In the first game, Ricky Trombley scored the game-winning run from second on a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run rally in the sixth. Hunnewell hit an RBI single to score the first run of the inning and then scored from third on Trombley’s fielder’s choice grounder.

Andy Berry wound up with two singles and an RBI for the Eagles.

Adams and Jepson each had two singles for Caribou.

Houlton takes two

At Houlton, Jordan Hill allowed only three hits, while striking out nine and walking one as the Shiretowners earned the first of two wins against Calais. They took the first game 8-1 and the second 11-1.

In the first game, Mike Cleary, Jeff Lenentine and Hill each singled to drive in two runs for Houlton.

Michael Ross had an RBI double for Calais.

In the second game, Harry Austin doubled once and singled twice to bring in once run for the Shiretowners. Hunter Caron and Ian Pasquarelli had two singles and an RBI apiece.

John Deacon had an RBI single for the Blue Devils.

At Rockport, Jon Walsh went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs to help lead the Camden Hills Windjammers past the Lions.

Casey Cates hit a two-run double and Miles Davee added a single and two RBIs.

At Deer Isle, Brian Ciomei hit two three-run home runs and two singles to lead Deer Isle. Colin Ciomei had a single with a home run and Rob Brown added with two singles. Pitchers, Josh Eaton and Nick Ciomei, combined to allow three hits.

For Sumner of East Sullivan, Mike Savoy had a single with an RBI and John Stuart added with a single and an RBI.

At Hampden, lefthander Evan Farley allowed only two hits while walking four and striking out 12 to lead Hampden to its ninth win.

Isaac Osborne and Zach Leal each singled for Nokomis.

Bangor, Bucksport win

At Bangor, Eric Anderson struck out 10, allowing four hits and one walk as Bangor took out the John Bapst Crusaders 3-1. Then Joe Robicheau allowed only three hits and three walks while striking out five to help Bucksport post a 9-4 win over John Bapst.

In the first game, Anderson, Brian Hackett and Ben Estebrook each singled twice for the Rams.

Sean Snyder had two singles for John Bapst.

In the second game, Nye Gifford singled twice and doubled once for the Golden Bucks. Eddie Robbins doubled an tripled, while Teddy Cooke had two singles.

Cody Anderson tripled for the Crusaders.

Joel Neill singled and tripled to drive in two runs for Hampden. Chris Pease doubled and singled for another RBI.

Brian McGinley singled and scored all three of Hermon’s runs. Brandy Hurd doubled and singled, bringing in one run. David Wilder added an RBI single.

Victor Jacques singled twice and doubled for Sumner and A.J. Pennartz doubled and singled.

Ellsworth wins two

At Ellsworth, Catie Cravens singled three times to drive in four runs as the Eagles flew by Caribou to win the first game 16-2. She struck out eight, while walking two and only allowing three hits to help Ellsworth win the second game 2-1.

In the first game, Tasha Manning had an RBI triple for the Eagles. Emily Miller allowed only two hits, walking three and striking out three.

Allison Richards singled twice for the Vikings.

In the second game, Manning doubled, singled and scored a run. Jenn Richter added two singled for Ellsworth.

Emily St. Peter, Makala Gahagan and Billie Martin each had a single for Caribou.

At Houlton, Sarah Perry and Jessica Whittaker limited Houlton to one run and 10 hits in two complete-game victories for the Blue Devils.

In game two, Michelle Ives and Keegan Hovey each singled twice for unbeaten Calais.

Natasha Ritchie pitched a two-hitter while notching 10 strikeouts and four walks. Cathy Driscoll had a pair of singles for the Shiretowners.

In game one, Sarah Perry notched 11 strikeouts while allowing four hits and no walks. Jessica Whittaker and Sarah Perry each hit RBI singles to score the only runs of the game.

Ritchie again was solid, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out 14. Sarah Harbison singled twice for Houlton.

At Husson College in Bangor, the Golden Bucks exploded for 13 runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings en route to the shutout win.

Bucksport’s Terren Hall scattered four hits for the victory and helped herself with a two-run single and a double. Brittni Adams added a two-run single. Jill Richards doubled and hit two RBI singles.

Meaghan Brown singled twice for the Crusaders.

At Hampden, Mia Meguire allowed only two hits and a walk and struck out six to lead Mount Desert Island to victory.

Sarah Ingalls and Lynn Bowden each chipped in with two singles for the winners with Ingalls driving in two runs and Bowden plating one. Meguire added two singles.

Jill Robertson and Emily Balaban each singled for Orono.

At Brewer, Anna Corey hit a bases loaded double in the bottom of the second to tie up the game 5-5. Kate Hanlon followed with an RBI single to score Christine Thoms and give the Witches a win.

Jordan McLain helped hold off the Warriors, striking out 12, walking none and allowing only four hits. Corey finished with a single, a double and three RBI, while Hanlon had two singles. Thoms, McLain and Sarah Risser each doubled. Julie Lorenz added an RBI single.

Michelle Barden, Alyssa Bragdon, Danielle White and Kayla Easter had a single apiece for Nokomis.
