BANGOR – With three pitchers combining for just seven hits and two walks, there weren’t a lot of ways for the Bangor and John Bapst softball teams to score in their matchup Saturday morning.

For the Rams, it came down to one hit, one ground ball, a hit batter and a mental lapse on the part of the Crusader defense to score the only run they would need in a 2-0 victory at Husson College’s O’Keefe Softball Complex.

Winning pitcher Kelly White singled and eventually scored on an error in the fourth, and Jessica Tweedie added an RBI single in the seventh to help the Bangor win its fourth straight.

The Rams go to 10-5 with a home game against Brewer left on their regular season schedule. Bapst falls to 6-8 with two games remaining after falling to Bucksport 13-0 Saturday afternoon at Husson.

Crusader pitcher Gwen Wadleigh, who was coming off a 16-strikeout effort against Orono Friday, allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out four through six innings. That meant the Rams had to jump on their few chances.

“Gwen’s a good pitcher and they have a good defense, but obviously we wanted to get a few more hits,” said Bangor senior Kate Turner, who singled and scored on Tweedie’s hit. “We take what we can get.”

Bangor did that in the fourth.

White hit a one-out groundball single to right and then was ruled safe at second when she slid in as Tawyna Godinez reached first on a fielder’s choice. Wadleigh then hit Turner to load the bases and Courtney Stevenson hit a ground ball to Bapst shortstop Rachael Stearns.

With White running from third, Stearns held on to the ball too long and everyone was safe. White would have likely scored anyway as the safe play for Stearns would have been to throw to first and concede the run, but it was ruled an error.

“There was one out so anything on the ground I was looking to run,” White said. “You’re just lucky sometimes.”

The Crusaders had two errors, but both teams played strong defense otherwise as the game clocked in at just 1 hour, 10 minutes. It also helped that the two starters gave up so few walks.

“Gwen’s pitching fantastic and she pitched well today,” said Bapst coach Bill Baker, whose daughter, former Bangor High catcher Heidi Baker, serves as the Crusaders’ pitching coach. “We mixed it up back and forth and she hit her spots really well.”

Wadleigh’s younger sister Amy Wadleigh, who attends Bangor High, closed out the game by retiring all nine Bapst batters she faced.

“Amy’s done an awesome job this year,” White said.

Tweedie provided Bangor’s second run when she singled in Turner in the seventh. Turner led off the inning with a single and advanced on a Stevenson sacrifice bunt.

Stearns went 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Gwen Wadleigh and Hilary Laferriere each singled for the Crusaders.
