Bangor derby participants ready to take on Buck Street

BANGOR – They’re ready to zoom down Buck Street on Saturday to win one of three categories in the Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby.

The derby begins Friday, June 3, with prerace events:

. 7 a.m. Car inspections and impounding.

. Noon. Media celebrity adult race.

. 12:30 p.m. Derby sponsors adult race.

. 5 p.m. Inspection and impounding end.

. Race day will be Saturday, June 4. The schedule is:

. 7 a.m. Drivers meet at the Bangor Daily News old mailroom on Buck Street.

. 7:30 a.m. Cars lined up by Bangor Daily News.

. 8 a.m. Group pictures in front of Bangor Daily News.

. 8:20 a.m. Parade of racers up Buck Street.

. 8:30 p.m. Parade of past champions.

. 9 a.m. Mayors of Bangor and Brewer race.

. 9:10 a.m. First race of the day.

. 10 a.m. Super Kids race begins.

. Noon. Celebrity race.

. 4 p.m. Race of champions – top eight cars in each division.

. 5 p.m. Awards ceremony.

Other activities will include: old Soap Box Derby cars from the 1950s on display at the gazebo in Paul Bunyan Park; a “Show and Shine” car and truck exhibit along the edge of Dutton Street; concessions all day; and a carnival to benefit Children’s Miracle Network, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The carnival will offer a bounce house, inflatable slide, bungee jumping, pony rides, face painting, cookie decorating, a dunk tank, puppet show, music and miscellaneous games for children of all ages.
