Brewer Travel PeeWees capture state hockey title

BREWER – The Brewer Travel PeeWees represented the state well while competing in the North Atlantic Hockey Sectionals held in Wayne, N.J., playing teams from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.

Brewer won one of their three games at the sectionals. The play was much more intense and the teams were very large and fast and had deep benches.

Brewer finished fifth overall for the season according to MEAHA standings facing the No. 2 Biddeford, No. 4 Lewiston, a very tough No. 8 Midcoast and No. 10 Winslow team at the state tournament.

The team played Casco Bay for the Maine championship game and scored an overtime win.

“This team played with more heart and desire during the state tournament than I’ve ever had the pleasure to coach a team before. The team struggled throughout the season against a very tight league, but poured it on toward the end when it really counts,” said Coach David Shedd.

Assistant Coach Tom Williams stated weeks before the tournament, “They’ll never see us coming.”

“Boy, was he right,” Shedd said. “Our motto was to appear at the states and take one team at a time, playing like it was the last game of the season – and that they did. Hard hitting (checking) coupled with solid goal tending and determination made the difference.

“We set two goals at the beginning of the season, goals we’ve set every year – first to win the states and secondly to obtain the Sportsmanship Award, an award to the team with the fewest penalty minutes for regular play during the season. The team obtained both.”

Players for Brewer are: Evan Nadeau, Jacob Valley, Cam Rawley, Sam Askins, Joey Thompson, Derrick Antworth, Lucas Lammond, Emily Russel, Michael Shedd, Tyler White, Kevin Fredrick, Kyle Haslam and Tyler McCormick. Coaches are David Shedd, Tom Williams, Greg Askins and Todd Rawley.

This is the second year in a row that the Brewer travel team was in a state championship contest that went into overtime.

The same day the PeeWees won their state championship, the Brewer Travel Bantams also won a state title.
