One has to wonder how much more punishment the residents of downtown Bangor can endure from Club Gemini, located on Harlow Street.
Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday what we have to look forward to from 9:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. is the bam, bam, bam, bam, bam from the bass at the club. There is at least 41/2 hours of this mind-numbing, teeth-grinding cacophony four nights out of every seven. How we residents of Court and Franklin streets dread the weekend. For how many more weeks, months, years will we have to tolerate this? Why should we be subjected to this noise pollution night after night?
Our committee has met a number of times to figure how we can deal with this. Suggestions have included closing windows, pulling shades and getting heavier curtains; converting dining rooms and living rooms into bedrooms in order to be farther away from the noise; taking sleeping pills; leaving fans on all night to block the sound; putting wooden wedges between windows and sashes to keep the windows from rattling. But why should we have to do these things? Residents of the city’s west and east sides don’t have to put up with this.
I suppose a common-sense alternative would be to have the club turn down the volume, but if it is a fact of life that Club Gemini is going to continue to disturb the peace and our quality of life indefinitely then the fact is that some of us will simply move away.
