Dirigo Boys, Girls State

BANGOR – John Bapst Memorial High School Head Landis Green has announced the names of this year’s delegates to Dirigo Boys and Girls State.

Selected to attend Girls State are Katherine Jones of Glenburn, Denise Miller of Clifton, Ashley Sanford of Holden, Anna Schwarcz of Orrington, and Sarah Vigneault of Alton. An alternate, Michelle Yang of Glenburn, was also chosen.

Selected to attend Boys State are Grant Batchelder of Clifton, Zachary Burnett of Carmel, Marc Girard of Glenburn, Nathan Lavoie of Carmel, and Lucas Perry of Eddington.

Dirigo Boys and Girls State provides Maine high school juniors with the opportunity to participate in a program that supplements their high school courses in government and its functions. In this program, the students role-play as they learn to campaign for local, county and state offices and then organize and carry out the functions of the state government. Candidates at John Bapst must submit a written essay for consideration and be chosen by the faculty.

Sponsors of Boy and Girls State delegates are traditionally veterans’ organizations; financial institutions; businesses; and patriotic, civic, fraternal, labor, student or teacher groups. This year, the John Bapst delegates will be sponsored by faculty and staff, the school’s Student Senate, the Key Club, W.S. Emerson & Co., Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis and the American Legion James W. Williams Post 12.

Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year

BREWER – Brewer High School mathematics teacher Michael Hutchins has been named Brewer Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. He will now compete in the Wal-Mart National Teacher of the Year program.

In addition to his teaching duties, Hutchins is adviser to the Key Club, Student Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

This year, Hutchins earned awards and grants totaling more than $6,000 for his unit, “Finding Your Way with GPS.” He has taught this unit to advanced math students as well as special needs students at Brewer High. As a final project, students placed two geocaches around Brewer High School.

A teacher for 24 years, Hutchins has a certificate in advanced studies in educational leadership. He was a Christa McAuliffe Fellow for Maine, a 2000 GTE Gift Fellow, a member of the Education Committee for the Challenger Learning Center of Maine and a 1998 NASA NewMast participant. Also in 1998, he and his students flew a student experiment on the Space Shuttle Endeavor STS-88.

Bucksport High School

BUCKSPORT – Kristina Allen of Bucksport has been selected to receive a $500 Golf Privilege Card Scholarship from the American Lung Association of Maine and participating golf courses. The scholarship is presented in the names of more than 100 golf courses and driving ranges that donate free and-or discounted playtime to the Lung Association’s Golf Privilege Card.

The year 2005 marks the ninth year for the Lung Association scholarships. To date, $13,500 in scholarship money has been awarded to 27 Maine seniors who have a connection with golf and are pursuing health careers.

Hampden Academy

HAMPDEN – Laura Sturdivant of Hampden is a member of the State Champion Mock Trial Team that represented Maine in the national championships held May 6-8 in Charlotte, N.C.

She is a junior at Hampden Academy, and this is her third year of participating on the mock trial team.

Penobscot Job Corps

BANGOR – The Penobscot Job Corps Center honored 13 students after they attained their high school diplomas in March and April. They are:

Free luncheon

BANGOR – A free luncheon for 40 military veterans was held at the Penobscot Job Corps Center Lion’s Den Restaurant on May 26.

The meal was prepared by Penobscot Job Corps Center’s culinary students under the tutelage of chef Valerie Moon. The event was organized to show appreciation for the con-tributions of local veterans to their country, said center director Eunice Johnson.

Central Middle School

CORINTH – The United States Achievement Academy has named Kalee Page of Kenduskeag a United States National Award winner in mathematics.

She is a pupil at Central Middle School in Corinth, and was nominated by teacher Joe Kingston. She is the daughter of Cathy LePage of Kenduskeag and the granddaughter of Elaine LePage of Milford and the late Ralph LePage.

District Art Show

HAMPDEN – The fourth annual district art show for SAD 22 will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 6, in Hampden Academy’s old gym. The art show will run concurrently with the Hampden Academy Pops Concert, and will feature artwork from Hampden, Winterport and Newburgh students in grades two through 12.

Bangor Christian School

BANGOR – The United States Achievement Academy has named Aaron M. Guimond of Hermon an All-American Scholar.

He is a pupil at Bangor Christian School and was nominated by teacher Kathy M. Reeves. He is the son of Bruce and Carol Guimond of Hermon.

Orono High School

ORONO – Ashley Card-Burns has received a $4,400 scholarship from the Maine State Golf Association.

She will be attending Kennebec Valley Community College to study occupational therapy.

Colleges

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK – Brian M. Dunn was awarded a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College in economics and government and legal studies. He also was an arts and entertainment writer, news editor and, most recently, the editor in chief of the Bowdoin Orient, the college newspaper.

Dunn was a U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship recipient and a 2001 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School. The son of Marcia and Howard Dunn of Glenburn, he has accepted a position in the management development program at M&T Bank in Buffalo, N.Y.

Hampshire College

AMHERST, Mass. – Scotti Goss, daughter of Kevin and Cindy Goss of Holden, graduated from Hampshire College on May 21.

Goss’ senior thesis, which Hampshire calls a Division III project, was titled “The Garden in Crisis: Representations of Agrarian Myth in Twentieth Century American Farm Novels.”

Connecticut College

New London, Conn. – Ashley Leighton, a sophomore at Connecticut College, was inducted into the Connecticut College chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology. Psi Chi was founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology.

Leighton, a 2003 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, is the daughter of Cary and Donetta Leighton of Glenburn.

Tulane University

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Ellen Marie Vollmers of Old Town was initiated into the Alpha of Louisiana Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Tulane University during commencement weekend in May.

Phi Beta Kappa honors the most outstanding liberal arts and sciences students. In selecting its honorees, the honor so-ciety considers the breadth and depth of students’ scholarship in liberal arts and sciences as well as grade point average.

Saint Anselm College

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Emerald L. Russell was named to the dean’s list for the second semester at Saint Anselm College. Russell is a member of the class of 2007, and the daughter of Carolyn and Edward Russell of Winterport.

UMaine Senior Skulls

ORONO – The Senior Skull Honor Society at the University of Maine has announced its newest inductees. The recent additions are members of its 2006 Centennial Class:

The Senior Skull Society was founded in 1906 to recognize, reward and promote outstanding leadership and scholarship and exemplary citizenship within the University of Maine community.

Today, the society comprises a group of seniors who have shown outstanding leadership abilities, academic achievement, community and campus involvement, responsibility and integrity as undergraduates at UMaine.
