Because “space is somewhat limited,” according to Justine Mencl, readers interested in taking the fifth annual Pittsfield Community Garden Club Bus Tour Aug. 13-14 should know the reservation deadline is Thursday, June 30.
Mencl told me this is a requested “return trip” of the tour that enables visitors to visit the famous Kingsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews, New Brunswick; Cottage Garden, the private garden of Alan and Gretchen Meade in Lubec; and Campobello Island in the afternoon.
You do not need to be a club member to take this tour.
Mencl said the return trip was requested by those who wanted to see Kingsbrae and Cottage Garden again, with the Campobello stop as an addition to the tour.
Overnight accommodations will be made at the St. Andrews Motor Inn, and the visit to Campobello will offer the opportunity to visit President Franklin Roosevelt’s “historic summer bungalow and gardens of dahlias and fuchsias.”
You should also be able to “see and hear whales” and view East Quoddy Head lighthouse, which, according to its Web site, is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.
The cost is $130 per person, double occupancy, and you can call Mencl, 487-5670, or Gail Watson, 277-3645, for information.
The Pittsfield Community Garden Club dates to 1932, Mencl told me, and its projects range from sending a seventh-grader to Maine Junior Conservation School at Bryant Pond Camp, to giving a monetary award for excellence in botany to a Maine Central Institute senior, to beautification of various sites in the area.
With tongue in cheek, Mencl wants you to know that “membership in this active club is ‘restricted’ to gardeners of all ages or to admirers of gardens” and that the cost of membership, just $2, has remained constant for two decades.
“Members come from miles around,” she added.
“To join at any time,” call president Betsy Doane, 487-2293, or Mary Connolly, 487-5560.

Congratulations to the 1,956 people who will participate in the American Lung Association Trek Across Maine-Sunday River to the Sea.
From Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, cyclists will leave Friday, June 17, and cover 180 miles in three days. They will arrive at Snow Marine Park in Rockland on Sunday, June 19.
Overnight stops will be at the University of Maine at Farmington and Colby College in Waterville.
According to information provided by the ALA of Maine, 1,700 cyclists were expected to raise $1 million to support the association’s efforts to improve the lung health of Maine residents.
If you thought about participating, wait until next year. Registration for the 2005 trek is closed.
According to the release, the trek is the largest, longest-running three-day bicycle event in New England, attracting participants and volunteers from 28 states.
It is also the most successful American Lung Association fund-raiser in the nation, a great compliment to the efforts of the Maine staff and volunteers.
