Fatal car jump linked to distress over friend

STOCKTON SPRINGS – A man who died after he jumped from a car traveling about 60 mph early Sunday was distraught about not seeing a former girlfriend, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department reported Tuesday.

Chief Deputy Bob Keating said Marcelino Alicea, 25, of Arcadia, Calif., had Waldo County family ties and had been visiting the Freedom area.

Alicea had recently enlisted in the military and wanted to speak with a former girlfriend in Bucksport before reporting for duty, Keating said. Alicea’s cousin Sean Santana, 20, of Thorndike drove him to the woman’s apartment, but she refused to let him in, Keating said. As Santana was driving back to the Freedom area, Alicea insisted on returning to Bucksport, but Santana refused.

Alicea then leaped from the vehicle as it was traveling at about 60 mph, Keating said. He died from the impact.

The incident was reported by Santana at 3:08 a.m. Sunday. The matter remains under investigation.
