BANGOR – Gwyndolyn Morneault will sing “America the Beautiful” during the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s tour in Millinocket.

Music director and conductor Xiao-Lu Li will lead the BSO in Thomas Oboe Lee’s Symphony No. 6: “The Penobscot River” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Stearns High School’s Walker Auditorium.

Thirteen-year-old Morneault of Millinocket won the Katahdin Idol Singing Contest in the summer of 2004. In 2005 she received the Outstanding Female Vocalist award at the All-State Vocal Jazz Festival.

Morneault has performed in the Millinocket Middle School Show Choir for the past two years; sings in the school’s full chorus and small chorus, and is a member of the Honors Choir. She is a cantor and a member of the choir at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Millinocket.

The Penobscot River Symphony, which the BSO premiered at a free concert in Bangor Oct. 23, 2004, features the Bangor High School Chorus, directed by George Redman. In addition to performing the choral excerpts of “The Penobscot River,” the BSO will perform audience favorites, including selections from Broadway and movies, and patriotic music.

“The Penobscot River” is a commissioned piece that reminisces about the days on the Penobscot. The choral text is adapted from works by Thoreau, Fanny Hardy Eckstorm, John Greenleaf Whittier and others.

Composer-in-residence Thomas Oboe Lee was a featured presenter during Arts Celebration Day in Millinocket on May 23. Lee will return for the tour with the BSO in June.

Advance tickets are $10, $8 for seniors, $5 for youth under 18, and $30 family maximum. They may be reserved at the Bangor Symphony Orchestra box office, 51A Main St., 942-5555, (800) 639-3221, and at Country Charms in Millinocket. Information is available at bangorsymphony.com.
