GRADUATION

John Bapst announces commencement roles

BANGOR – John Bapst Memorial High School Headmaster Landis Green has announced the honor parts for this year’s graduating class. Evelyn Sharkey, daughter of James and Marie Sharkey of Orono, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2005. Kyle Lad, son of Robert and Patricia Lad of Glenburn, has been named salutatorian.

Of the two soon-to-be graduates, Green said, “They’ve both made their school a better place and will commence having left a very positive mark on those of us who’ve worked with them. When I told Evelyn and Kyle of the honors parts they’d received, I couldn’t help confessing my first reaction at learning that they’d be this year’s valedictorian and salutatorian. Despite the turmoil of the world in which we live, much is right in the world when Evelyn and Kyle earn the honors they have. On graduation day, they will lead a spirited and wonderful group of students, much as they’ve led teams, performances and clubs during their time here. Both are incredibly talented musicians;, athletes, and, of course, scholars. I, for one – and I’m in good company – count myself lucky to know them.”

Evelyn is a National Merit Scholar, member of the National Honor Society, and recipient of the Society of Women Engineers Award, the Princeton Book Award and the 2005 Maine Principals’ Association Award. She has earned high honors every quarter throughout high school and received numerous John Bapst academic awards for outstanding achievement. She is a member of the team that holds the state record in the 4X400 meter relay and qualified to compete in the New England High School Championships for three consecutive years, this past season capturing the state 800-meter title. Evelyn has served as captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams, soccer team and math team; held the offices of president of Key Club, vice president of the International Club and secretary of National Honor Society. She has been a valuable member of the fine arts program, earning All-State classical flute for two consecutive years and performing in the All Eastern Music Festival. She has earned the Distinguished Service Award for her extensive volunteer work in the community. Evelyn will attend Tufts University this fall where she plans to major in biology.

Kyle is a National Merit Scholar and member of the National Honor Society. He has earned honor roll status every quarter throughout high school and received numerous John Bapst academic awards for outstanding achievement.
