BANGOR – Sam Merrill stroked a two-run single to spark a three-run first inning Wednesday as fifth-seeded Mount Desert Island earned a 3-1 Class B baseball quarterfinal win over No. 4 John Bapst at the Winkin Baseball Complex.
Marcus Maffucci and Matt Grover each singled for the Trojans behind Andy Pooler, who fired a three-hitter.
Cody Andrews, Nick Hubbard and Hunter Umphrey singled for the Crusaders to back Mike Tardiff, who scattered four hits in defeat.

At Calais, Jody Pinkham had an RBI single, then Kayla Higgins had an RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to break a 4-4 tie as the eighth-seeded Tigers upset top-ranked and previously unbeaten Calais.
Pinkham finished with two singles and an RBI. Nicole Leach added two singles, while Jessica Daley struck out 13 and walked two.
Steph Perry singled twice and brought in one run for the Blue Devils. Chrissy Driscoll and Danielle O’Brien each had two singles.
