Orrington youth seek to send soldiers their CDs

ORRINGTON – When three of the Center Drive Singers performed in Davenport Park on Memorial Day, they sang a special message of thanks to those who serve in the armed forces.

On June 14, at the Flag Day ceremonies on the Bangor waterfront, they will use their talents to spread the message of thanks and encouragement.

With each new performance, the girls said, they hope to inspire more people to join them in a special project. Their goal is to get as many of their CD “Sweet Freedom” as possible into the hands of veterans and soldiers in combat. They want to spread their special thanks to the heroes of America, especially those stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Approximately one year ago, four middle school pupils at Center Drive School in Orrington recorded “Sweet Freedom,” a CD of patriotic songs, which was intended as a fund-raiser for the Center Drive School drama and music department. Founding members of the group are Krystyn Murphy, 15; and Jewels Watson, 14. New additions are Ali Gormley, 15; Erin Keim, 16; and Tori Mason, 13. Lauren Nichols and Kristen Huff also were original members.

The girls have received many comments from soldiers who received a copy of “Sweet Freedom.” One soldier stationed in Afghanistan wrote, “I would like to thank the Center Drive Singers for giving me a copy of “Sweet Freedom.” I really liked the songs you chose. They really fit the situation we’re in right now. You all have great talent, strong voices and the will to succeed. Keep up the good work! Stay safe. Continue what you are doing because it may not seem a lot to you, but it means a lot to us.”

Each CD the girls have given away has been purchased by a donation from a caring citizen, and proceeds go to the Center Drive School. Their goal is to distribute CDs to 300 more soldiers, especially those from Maine who are on active duty. Those interested in assisting with the project can provide an opportunity for the girls to sing at area functions, purchase a CD to give to a soldier or make a donation to send a CD to a soldier overseas.

The CD is available at www.cdbaby.com/centerdrive, or www.centerdrivesingers.com.
