GSA, Lee send 2 teams to EM finals MCI rallies past Tigers to reach ‘B’ title contest

ROCKLAND – Ryan Kennedy’s RBI double with two outs and two strikes in the top of the seventh tied the game, and No. 10 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield then scored three runs in the top of the eighth Saturday to earn a 6-3 Class B semifinal baseball victory.

It was MCI’s third straight road victory of the playoffs.

Josh Girror’s single through a drawn-in infield gave the Huskies the lead in the eighth, and Andrew Connors followed with a two-run single.

Victor Quint earned the pitching win with 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief in support of starter Phil Hendricks. Andrew deBerthune doubled and singled for MCI, while Connors singled twice as the Huskies avenged a pair of regular-season losses

John Coppola hit a two-run double for No. 3 Rockland.

At Bar Harbor, junior righthander Sam Merrill pitched a four-hitter as Mount Desert Island qualified for the Eastern Maine title game with a win over Bucksport.

Merrill struck out eight while walking two and hitting a batter for the fifth-ranked Trojans, who last played in an EM title game in 1988.

Mike Hamlin paced the MDI offense with two singles and an RBI, while Andy Pooler also singled twice and Marcus Maffucci and Matt Grover each added an RBI single.

Joey Carmichael contributed an RBI single for No. 8 Bucksport.

At Blue Hill, senior lefthander Dan Hilts pitched a five-inning, two-hit shutout as the two-time defending Class C state champions knocked off No. 4 Stearns of Millinocket for the third time this season.

Hilts struck out three batters while walking no one for the top-rated Eagles.

Phineas Peake had four singles and an RBI George Stevens Academy. Collin Henry added a single and three RBIs. Ross Gallagher had two singles with one RBI and Lance Gale contributed an RBI single.

Justin Pelkey and D.J. Charette each singled for the Minutemen.

Searsport 2, Dexter 1

At Dexter, Matt Nickerson walked with the bases loaded and Casey Ashey scored the game-winning run as third-ranked Searsport earned its second straight trip to the EM finals.

Jared Burke singled twice and drove in a run in the second inning to tie the game for Searsport. Mike Adams added two singles for the Vikings.

Nickerson also earned the pitching win, striking out 10, and walking two.

Dexter righty Chris Rabideau gave up only one run, striking out 12 and walking four.

Aaron Woodman doubled, singled and scored No. 2 Dexter’s lone run in the first inning. Mark Pullen also had three singles for the Tigers.

At Lee, Charlie Boulrisse pitched a five-hitter and the defending Eastern Maine champion Pandas scored four runs after two were out in the bottom of the first to pull away from No. 8 Katahdin of Stacyville.

Boulrisse struck out seven and walked three while improving his record to 4-1.

Gerry Worster had a two-run single to highlight Lee’s first-inning uprising. Kent Doane and B.J. Crocker followed with RBI singles.

Tyler Thompson had a two-run double in the second as the fifth-seeded Pandas pushed their lead to 6-1.

Thompson also had a single, while Worster finished with two singles and three RBIs, Kris King had a double, single and two runs scored, and Crocker added two singles.

At Eastport, Iain Martin singled twice and drove in a fifth-inning run to help the third-seeded Mariners past the No. 2 Tigers.

Thomas Robbins doubled and singled to bring in another run for Deer Isle-Stonington. Josh Eaton added two singles.

Sophomore Ray Garcia and senior Nick Ciomei combined to pitch a four-hitter for the Mariners.

Aaron Sullivan had an RBI single for previously undefeated Shead.

At Bucksport, Jill Richards doubled and singled, while Katie Allen Jr. had an RBI double to help the top-ranked Golden Bucks earn a trip to the EM championship game.

Tarren Hall gave up only one hit and two runs for Bucksport while striking out one and walking no one for Bucksport.

Stephanie Shuster singled for the fourth seeded Trojans.

Hillary Arsenault singled twice with an RBI for No. 2 Stearns and Felicia Achorn singled twice.

Central, Sumner to play Monday

A thunderstorm forced postponed of Saturday’s Central-Sumner of East Sullivan Eastern Maine Class C softball semifinal in Corinth. The thunderstorm, which lasted half an hour, began during the third inning with Central holding a 1-0 lead on Jenny Rollins’ first-inning inside-the-park homer.

They will start a new game on Monday at 5 p.m.

Class D

So. Aroostook 7, Ashland 6

At Dyer Brook, Makenzie Hardy scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the 12th inning, following a sacrifice bunt from Kaylea Collier. Her run broke a 6-6 tie in favor of the top-ranked Warriors.

Amanda Clark tied up the game with a two-run single, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the top-ranked Warriors rallied from a 6-0 deficit.

Christine Lawler and Hardy each singled three times for Southern Aroostook.

Lindsay Long singled three times and drove in three runs for the fourth-ranked Hornets. Ashley Nemer also had two singles.

At Fort Fairfield, Shelby Pickering, Marci Moors, Amanda Gifford and Brooke Harris each singled as the third-seeded Pandas topped the No. 2 Tigers in a regional semifinal.

Kerri Cunningham and Lauren Beckwith each singled twice for Fort Fairfield.
