With construction and other activity along Bangor’s waterfront, this summer’s annual “Cool Sounds” concert series is moving to a new location just a short distance away.
Sally Bates, business and economic development officer for the city of Bangor, said the free Thursday evening events that formerly were held “right behind the harbor master’s building,” have been moved slightly further south along the river, to the corner of Front and Railroad streets.
The concerts begin at 7 p.m. each Thursday, starting June 16, and continue through July 21.
For your “clip-and-save” purposes, here’s the summer schedule.
The country music sounds of the Dave Wooley Band open the series at 7 p.m., but if you are interested, the band will begin setting up at 5:30 p.m.
The contemporary folk music trio Devonsquare performs June 23.
Rock, pop, folk and jazz with Richard Punzi is featured June 30, and the 195th Maine Army National Guard Band takes the stage for the concert on July 7.
Vocalist Kenya Hall and One Five One perform jazz, R&B, soul, rock and reggae on July 14, and Cheepskates, a band influenced by the Everly Brothers, Brian Wilson and Neil Young, entertains on July 21.
The concert series is produced by Bangor Center and sponsored by Sea Dog Restaurant, Epic Sports, Antique Marketplace and Cafe and the Bangor Daily News.
But the concerts are not the only draw for Thursdays, with the introduction of the Artisans Market, which will be 4-7 p.m. each of those summer days, along the Kenduskeag Stream.
The market will include more than 30 artisans featuring their own products, ranging from jewelry to pottery, paintings and other handcrafted items.
And you can eat there as well, since nine area restaurants will have concession stands located throughout the market.
So if you’re looking for a great night out the next six Thursdays, with dining, shopping and entertainment all in the same area, the Bangor Waterfront is the place to be.
On behalf of the Peony Society of Maine, Paula Boyer Rougny of Bangor invites you to enjoy the Garden Tour Plush with Peonies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 18, at 23 Ohio St. in Bangor.
More than 70 peony varieties can be seen in this garden that is described as “a small oasis of tranquility in the center of urban hubbub.”
Admission is just $2 per person, and the garden will be open rain or shine.
Other plants, including sweet rocket, poppies, Siberian iris, holly and forget-me-nots, await your visit, as do members of the Peony Society, who will answer any questions you may have about transplanting, dividing and growing the “queen of flowers” that dates back thousands of years to China.
Catalogs and other information will be available for your review.
You also will learn to identify peony varieties, according to information provided by Boyer Rougny.
In fact, she suggests, you just may leave the tour dreaming of Thunderbolt, peonies that are crimson with black or scarlet streaks; Bowl of Cream, a creamy white; Gay Paree, a flamboyant, magenta peony; Coral Supreme, which is coral and early blooming; Wings of the Morning, a peach, airy peony; or Raspberry Sundae, a delicious pink-and-white beauty.
Trustee Jonathan Henry and members of the Hampden Congregational Church invite you to enjoy a supper and concert this weekend.
The Beans and Casseroles Supper will be served at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 18, followed by the entertainment of a cappella group Impromptu at 6:30 p.m., both at the church, 101 Main Road North in Hampden.
Admission for the supper is $6 for adults, $3 for children under 12 and $18 for a family of four or more.
Admission for the concert is by donation at the door.
Children’s toys, books, household items and more await those who attend the St. James Episcopal Church Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 18, at the church rectory-office and Canterbury House at the corner of Chapel Road and College Avenue in Orono.
Paula Baines reports this is a rain-or-shine event, and that it might just be the place to “find some great deals for your house, camp or cottage.”
Proceeds from the sale benefit the church and its programs, which include its fourth Friday Suppers.
