Summer art classes

The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its youth summer art classes taught by Bev Langley, Brewer elementary school art teacher. Classes are scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 28, and run through Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Classes for pupils ages 6-9 are held on Tuesdays at 9-10:15 a.m.; 10:30-11:45 a.m.; 1-2:15 p.m.; and 2:30-3:45 p.m.

Classes for students ages 10-14 are held Wednesdays at 9-10:30 a.m.; 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.; and 1:30-2:45 p.m.

Activities will depend on number and age of registrants but will include sculpture, decoupage, acrylic painting and mask making. Space is limited and registrations are accepted on a first-paid, first-entered basis. The fee for residents is $30 and $35 for others.

Central Middle School

CORINTH ? The United States Achievement Academy had named Kalee LePage of Kenduskeag a United States National Award winner in mathematics.

She is a pupil at Central Middle School in Corinth and was nominated by teacher Joe Kingston. She is the daughter of Cathy LePage of Kenduskeag and the granddaughter of Elaine LePage of Milford and the late Ralph LePage.

Central High School

CORINTH ? The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Central High School student Stephanie Scott from Stetson has been selected for membership. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement was made by society founder and chairman Claes Nobel, senior member of the Nobel Prize family.

Scott is the daughter of Cecil and Bonnie Scott of Stetson.

Powerhouse Teen Center

BANGOR ? The public is invited to attend Pizza Fest 2005, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Bangor Conference Center, 701 Hogan Road.

A pizza challenge will raise funds for the Powerhouse Teen Center of Bangor. Participants will sample local pizza and place votes. There will be games, arts and crafts and entertainment for the family. The cost is $5, $3 for children 12 and under.

The Powerhouse Teen Center is open 6-9 p.m. Fridays at the Salvation Army building, 65 South Park St.

Participating pizza donors are Evo Italian Restaurant, Uno’s Pizzeria, Pat’s Pizza of Orono and Pizza Oven. The event hosts are Evo and the Bangor Banquet & Conference Center.

The Powerhouse Teen Center’s mission is to inspire and empower young people and their families ? especially those in disadvantaged circumstances ? to realize their potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The center is a project of the Salvation Army in affiliation with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Teen Parent Program grads

BANGOR ? Twenty-one young mothers in the Good Samaritan Teen Parent Program were awarded high school diplomas during a ceremony June 9 at Eastern Maine Community College. Dick Madore, former director of the Bangor Adult Education Program, was the keynote speaker.

Downtown art program

BANGOR ? Windover Downtown will hold an open house 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at its studio, 9 Central St, room 209. All are welcome to attend and meet the new program manager, learn more about the upcoming summer program and donate supplies.

Lyndsy Shuman is the new program manager of Windover Downtown. She is a recent graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in new media. Her experience includes working as a student tutor coordinator for the University of Maine Tutor Program and director of the art program at China Lake Baptist Camp.

Windover Downtown will conduct its first summer program. During July and August, 5- and 6-year-olds may spend three days a week investigating painting, fabric arts, drawing, 3D design, narrative and nature. Classes will run 9:30 a.m.-noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting July 13. Parents may register their children for one or more weeks.

Windover Downtown will accept donations during the open house ? painting and drawing supplies, magazines, sewing machines, computers and accessories, cameras and more. The studio will accept furniture and containers for storage and organization. Monetary donations are welcome.

Windover Downtown is a nonprofit art education program. For the past two years the program has offered an after-school curriculum for children 7 to 14 years old. Health fair excellence

ORONO ? An interactive health fair, organized and hosted by the University of Maine’s Black Bear Dining Services this spring at York Dining Commons, has been recognized for excellence by the National Association of College and University Food Services.

In the association’s Cuisine Creators Contest, the UMaine program received first place in the best national Nutrition Month promotion category.

The health fair included a variety of vegetarian, vegan and heart-healthy entrees, along with information and activities intended to inform participants about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Also included were demonstrations of active lifestyles, including information about UMaine’s trail system, fitness assessments, smoking cessation education and other wellness opportunities.

Award winners will be honored on July 15 during the association’s national conference in New Orleans.

Amherst College

AMHERST, Mass. ? Cameron Millard graduated May 22 from Amherst College with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. An Orono High School graduate, he is the son of Dr. Peter Millard and Emily Wesson of Orono.

NEWTON, Mass. ? Mary Wollstadt of Old Town has been named to the dean’s list at Lasell College. A sophomore at Lasell, she is majoring in fashion design and production. Wollstadt is a 2003 graduate of Old Town High School.

New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. ? Erica Hamlin of Alton was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at New England College.

Susquehanna University

SELINSGROVE, Pa. ? Katherine A. Meyer of Bangor graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Susquehanna University on May 15. Her activities at Susquehanna included crew team, Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honor society and Beta Beta Beta biology honor society.

Meyer is the daughter of Harry and JoAnne Meyer and a 2000 graduate of Bangor High School. She plans to move to the west coast and secure a job in human resources.

Rachel A. Stone of Newport earned a bachelor’s degree in geological and environmental science. Her activities at Susquehanna included indoor and outdoor track.

Stone is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Stone and a 2001 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School. She plans to work in Harrisburg and will be married in August.

St. Joseph’s College

STANDISH ? Adam Ham, Bangor; Marianne Alley, Hampden; Joseph Schacht, Hermon; Jessica Maurais, Old Town; and Marie Lunt, Orono, were named to the honors list for the spring semester at St. Joseph’s College.
