Hermon resident Cheryl Murphy has committed to walking the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day that benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
Covering 20 miles each day, the Breast Cancer 3-Day begins Friday, July 8, in Nashua, N.H., and ends Sunday, July 10, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.
Murphy, 42, will be joined by her friend and teammate, Ann Beaurivage of Ware, N.H.
The women are walking in honor of Murphy’s mother, Kay Murphy of Lubec, who is celebrating four years as a breast cancer survivor.
“I need to raise a minimum of $2,100” to participate, Cheryl Murphy said, “but my goal is to raise $4,000.”
To date, she has raised $800, but with your help, she hopes that amount will soon increase.
Murphy is hosting a 3-Day Yard Sale-Bake Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at 356 Billings Road in Hermon.
Coffee and doughnuts will be on sale in the morning, and she will have hot dogs and soda on sale for lunch.
To find the site, she said, “look for the pink balloons.”
Murphy is not only asking that you patronize this fund-raiser; she also is seeking donations of food or items for it.
If you can help, or if you have questions, call her at 848-7396, or e-mail Murfc@midmaine.com.
Murphy is an independent kitchen consultant for The Pampered Chef, and she also works at Mainly Delights in Bass Harbor. This is her first time participating in such an event.
“I’ve been training,” she said. “I’m up to five miles a day, and I’m just exercising … and drinking lots of water.”
If you cannot attend or contribute to the sale but want to help Murphy reach her goal, make a check out to Boston 3-Day and mail it to her at the above address.
You can also contribute to her account online at www.the3day.org using her ID number, 79153350.
Bill Robertson, vice president of the Franklin Historical Society, wants local readers and summer visitors to know that the public is invited to attend the society’s monthly meetings.
The society meets at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at the Franklin Historical Society Museum Building on Hog Bay Road, Route 220 in East Franklin.
Robertson also wanted to point out that the meeting date is a change from previous years.
The program for the first meeting, which is 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, sounds delightful.
It features a video made by Sumner Memorial High School students, covering the two days they spent at the FHS Museum, and George Torrey’s “Workshop on Old Tools.”
The FHS Museum is open 2-4 p.m. Saturdays, July through September, or by appointment by calling Helen Cantor, 565-2223, or Irene Obermann, 565-3336.
Sandra Gordon of Waldo County General Hospital’s Office of Community Relations reports a Handbag and Accessories Sale will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, in the hospital’s Education Center, 118 Northport Ave. in Belfast.
Conducted by the Bag Ali Co., the sale will feature leather bags, fashion bags, backpacks, briefcases, travel bags, evening bags, wallets, totes, scarves and shawls.
This company, she wrote, has conducted similar sales at hospitals throughout the state, but this is a first for Belfast.
“There will be something for everyone, at reasonable prices, so plan to buy a new summer bag or pick up a gift,” Gordon suggests.
Proceeds benefit Hospital Aid, which has pledged $60,000 to the hospital’s current surgical services campaign to build a new wing for operating rooms.
Credit cards and checks will be accepted.
For information about this fund-raiser, call Gordon at 338-9303.
Friends and family members are planning a benefit spaghetti supper for Lorrie Gray of Dedham, who is receiving treatment for an unknown, serious bacterial infection. Organizers still need a few items for the event, which will be held 5-7 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Dedham School.
Tickets are $5 each or $20 for a family.
Items needed include cups, napkins, butter, salad dressings and a few more pies for a homemade pie auction.
Also, the planners would like you to save your returnable bottles and cans because they hope to collect enough to fill a dump truck.
If you can help with this benefit, call Diane Jackson, 843-7495, or Fran Payson, 843-6977.
