AUGUSTA – Lauren Blake doubled to drive in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run as the Messalonskee of Oakland softball team rallied past South Portland 7-4 for the Class A state championship Saturday at Cony Park.
The high school postseason continues today at 4 p.m. with the rescheduled Class C state softball title game between Central of Corinth and Telstar of Bethel at Brewer High’s Coffin Field. The game was scheduled for Saturday but postponed because of weather.
The Eastern Maine Class A baseball final between No. 5 Edward Little of Auburn and No. 2 Oxford Hills of South Paris will also be played Monday with a 5 p.m. game at Morton Field in Augusta. The state championship game will be Tuesday with the Eastern Maine winner facing Western Maine champion Westbrook at Morton Field at 5 p.m.
In Class A softball, the Eagles of Oakland rallied from a 4-3 deficit to win their first ‘A’ title in five tries. Messalonskee won a Class B state title in 1991.
The Eagles scored three runs in the first inning but Jamie Harmon and Krystal Shannon of South Portland (16-3) each hit two-run singles in the top of the fifth to help the Riots gain the lead.
Messalonskee responded with a leadoff single by Kristen Ray and Blake’s game-tying RBI double. Blake scored on an error. Ashley Currier had an RBI triple in the sixth and another run scored on an error.
Amanda Barker, who has pitched all 19 games for Messalonskee, scattered eight hits to pick up the win.
