SULLIVAN – Three sisters from Seal Cove were injured, one of them seriously, Saturday when the car they were riding in was struck from behind on U.S. Route 1, state police said.

The girls, whose names were not released, were traveling in a 1995 Plymouth Neon when the car was struck from behind by a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Kathleen Johnson, 47, of Milbridge, according to Maine State Police Trooper Jessica Shorey.

One of the sisters was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she was in stable condition, Shorey said.

On Sunday, Shorey said the girl was transferred to a Boston hospital. No further information about her condition was available.

Shorey said the girl, who was seated in the back seat, suffered neck and internal injuries in the crash. Rescuers had to use extrication tools to remove her from the wreckage.

The two other sisters suffered scrapes and bruises, Shorey said. They were taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, treated and released. Johnson was not injured.

The crash occurred at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday as the Dodge was stopped on Route 1 to turn left onto Ashville Road. Johnson apparently became distracted as she approached the Dodge, Shorey said.

The accident remained under investigation Sunday. Shorey said she and Sgt. Bart Tokas of the Ellsworth Police Department were reconstructing it.

All of the people involved in the accident were wearing seat belts, Shorey said. The Dodge was demolished. The Grand Prix had significant front-end damage.
