I had the opportunity one Saturday afternoon to stop Bangor Mall traffic so that a certain Mrs. Duck and her five ducklings could cross the street. I did not have to think twice about my actions.

“Make Way for Ducklings,” by Maine author Robert McCloskey has been a favorite of mine since childhood. I read it to my students when I was a teacher and then to my daughter. I remember the Boston policemen halting traffic to allow Mrs. Duck and the ducklings safe travel to their new home – the Boston Commons pond – famous for its swan boats.

Mall drivers that Saturday in both lanes smiled, clapped and gave me the “thumbs up.” Perhaps some of them had read the very same book.

Mrs. Duck did not acknowledge our presence; her purpose was clear and her ducklings, without a peep or a quack, followed her.

I encourage you to read this book to the youngsters in your lives. I also recommend “Blueberries for Sal,” another McCloskey book, where the main character has a “close encounter” with a Maine black bear.

However, I do not wish readers an experience such as Sal’s with the bear on Blueberry Hill!
