Governor Baldacci has overseen the creation of over 5,000 new jobs so far. Working to keep the people’s well-being above partisan politics, he has called for bipartisanship and cooperation in light of the potential closure of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and realignment of the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Democrats in the Legislature have reacted, working with Republican leadership to reach a compromise on the budget. Gov. Baldacci has repeatedly endorsed efforts to keep young people in the state, and has articulated a coherent vision for a strong, vibrant Maine economy.
Sadly, Mike Leavitt, the executive director of the Maine Republican Party, has ignored the governor’s call to stand together, against the federal government’s attempt to close our bases. In his letter “Listen to the people” (BDN 6/13/05) he proposed no solutions. Attacking the Governor’s bipartisanship, he attempted to blame the lowered bond rating on Baldacci, when in reality it was the proposed “people’s veto” which caused the state’s bond rating to be lowered.
I am confident that the people of the State of Maine are smart enough to see through Mr. Leavitt’s argument, understanding that the governor is working hard for the working families of Maine.
