Mount Ararat of Topsham’s Beth Wilcox and Sintayehu Taye or Portland were named the Gatorade Maine Track and Field Athletes of the Year for girls and boys, respectively.
Wilcox , a senior, won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races at the Class A state track and field competition and was a member of the Eagles’ winning 4-by-400 relay, establishing a new school record with a time of 4 minutes, 5.3 seconds and leading Mount Ararat to the state title.
Freshman Taye broke the Class A state record in the 1,600 with a time of 4:09.69 and was a member of the Bulldogs’ championship 4-by-800 relay. He placed second in the 3,200 at New Englands. During the indoor season he set a national freshman record in the 2-mile with a time of 9:16.65.
