Frankfort company collecting ‘peanuts’

FRANKFORT – Frankfort Glass Works in Frankfort is now a Peanut Hotline collection center for EPS plastic packaging loose fill or “peanuts.” Frankfort Glass Works will accept clean plastic peanuts from residents and businesses and reuse them in their outgoing packages. The company also will accept other forms of foam packing materials.

The Peanut Hotline, founded in July 1991, is the Plastic Loose Fill Council’s nationwide program for reusing packing peanuts. The hot line, (800) 828-2214, is a 24-hour, toll-free service for consumers to learn which local businesses accept plastic peanuts for reuse.

Most hot line calls come from people who received information about the program with a mail-order purchase. More than 200 catalog companies use package inserts printed with the toll-free number.

Nationwide, hot line collection centers report that the

hot line is popular because people appreciate how re-use contributes to environmental savings.

Frankfort Glass Works ships packages to customers

worldwide on a daily basis and includes information inserts in all its outgoing packages to encourage people to participate in the program.

The Plastic Loose Fill Council, a national trade association with headquarters in Oakland, Calif., maintains the Peanut Hotline and the Web site loosefillpackaging.com, which provides information on the use and re-use of plastic loose fill or packing peanuts.

Packing materials may be dropped off at 28 North Searsport Road in Frankfort. Materials are accepted 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday or by appointment or chance. For information call
