All-America Team swimmer
ORONO – Kate Kovenock, a graduate of Orono High School, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team for the second straight year. She was a second team selection and graduated May 22 from Connecticut College with a degree in philosophy.
Kovenock, a 2004 Academic All-American, shattered the record books at Connecticut College. She holds school, conference and conference championship records in the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. She finished her career as an 11-time All-American.
In March 2004, Kovenock made history by capturing the first NCAA championship for the college’s swimming program, winning the 50-yard freestyle in Peters, Mo.
Kovenock was named the Senior Swimmer of the Year at the 2005 New England Small Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship in Middlebury, Vt. She scored the most points in four years of NESCAC competition. She led her team to its highest finish at the 2005 NECAC and was a three-event winner, setting pool records in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.
Tennis program for adults
BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its adult tennis lesson program, set for 7-8:15 p.m. June 28-Aug. 8 at the Brewer High School tennis courts.
The class is designed for beginners in a noncompetitive program. The focus will be basic skills, rules and court etiquette. Cost for the program is $25 for Brewer residents, $30 for others. To learn about the tennis program call 989-5199.
Baseball trip
BREWER – The Parks and Recreation Department has a limited number of tickets to see the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday, Aug. 4. The trip is open to youngsters age 11-15. The cost is $30 for Brewer residents, $35 for others.
The bus will leave the Brewer Auditorium parking lot at 8 a.m., and participants will watch the Sea Dogs, the Boston Red Sox’s Double A affiliate, play the New Britain Rock Cats before returning to the Brewer Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Call 989-5199 for information.
British soccer camp
BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department will serve as the host for a Challenger British Soccer Camp Aug. 1-5 at Doyle Field in Brewer.
Challenger camps feature specially selected coaches from Great Britain who have broad soccer experience and a genuine interest in developing players. The camp features fun, personal challenge, maximum participation and positive feedback while providing advanced training for players.
Participants will receive a soccer ball and a camp shirt.
Children age 4-6 will meet 9-10:30 a.m. The fee is $70 for Brewer residents, $80 for others. Children age 6-12 will meet 9 a.m.-noon. The fee is $100 for residents, $110 for others.
