Regarding Rick Baird’s letter, “Putting America first” (BDN, June 4-5):
Baird, who is a summer visitor to Maine, states that he is disgusted with our state’s general stance on national politics and obviously doesn’t like the idea that our two lady senators often break with their party on issues that they feel would have a negative effect on the people they have sworn to serve. This is what their job is. It is to do what they think is best for the people who elected to put their trust in them and not be just another rubber-stamp for the powers to be.
The fact that Sens. Snowe and Collins are considered unbeatable in a run for re-election shows that most of the people in Maine – Independents, Democrats and Republicans alike – support them and are proud of them for their moderate views. I would call this “putting America first.”
Just because a person is elected to be president does not somehow elevate them to a god-like status where it should be perceived that they can do no wrong and their judgment should never be questioned.
Heaven help us all if we get to this point because it will truly be the end of democracy as we know it.
