A Bangor man told police on Tuesday afternoon that when he told his nephew to leave his residence after an overnight stay, the nephew pelted him with a stone and threatened to burn the house down, according to a police report.
Bangor police charged the nephew, Adam Freeman, 18, of Brewer, with assault, criminal threatening, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.
Besides hitting his uncle with a golf ball-sized rock on the left side of his body, Freeman also pulled up hundreds of dollars’ worth of flowers and shrubs outside the home, the uncle told Bangor police Officer Douglas Moore. Freeman also reportedly told his uncle he would return later with others and burn down the house.
Freeman was found in a room at the Stable Inn in Brewer, where he was summoned.
A Bangor woman arrested on Tuesday on three warrants was on her way to the Penobscot County Jail when she met up with a Bangor police officer who was looking for her in connection with the theft of some checks.
A week earlier, the woman’s grandfather contacted police and told Officer Marty McCrea that 15 checks, worth slightly more than $6,000, had been taken from his mailbox and cashed by his granddaughter, identified as Heather Richards, 23, of Bangor.
Meanwhile, as part of efforts by the police department’s Special Enforcement Team, Officer Eric Tourtelotte and Sgt. Thomas Reagan arrested Richards on the warrants, two of which were for failure to appear in court and another for failure to pay a fine.
McCrea, at the jail for an unrelated matter, interviewed Richards and she admitted to signing five of the checks, worth nearly $1,600, but said she wasn’t sure if she had signed the other checks or if her grandfather had. The grandfather told police he didn’t sign any of the checks.
She was charged with theft and forgery.
Old Town police arrested a 25-year-old man Tuesday night after it was reported he assaulted his girlfriend and then prevented her 10-year-old daughter from calling the police. The girl managed to run to a neighbor’s home to get help.
Daniel Astbury, 25, of Old Town was charged with assault, criminal mischief and obstructing the report of a crime for the incident on Barbie Court.
During an argument, Astbury allegedly held his girlfriend down in a recliner and smashed his face into hers, and she tried to fend him off by hitting him, Old Town police Sgt. Travis Roy said Wednesday. The woman’s daughter came into the room and then went into a bedroom to call the police.
The bedroom door was locked, but Astbury forced his way into the room, took the phone from the girl and threw it against the wall, disabling it, Roy said. Astbury then followed his girlfriend outside with the daughter behind them. There Astbury held his girlfriend in a bear hug to prevent her from going to a neighbor, so the girl ran in the other direction to another neighbor, who called the police, Roy said.
Astbury told Old Town police Officer Bobbie Pelletier that he was just trying to calm his girlfriend down and that she was the one who had assaulted him.
