Summer fun for girls
The Abnaki Girl Scout Council is sponsoring summer fun activities for girls in various downtown locations on four Tuesdays beginning July 12. The program is open to girls ages 6-17, regardless of Girl Scout affiliation.
Girls will experience the art world with two professional artists on July 12, enjoy a production at Penobscot Theatre as its summer workshop presents a showcase of Shakespearean scene adaptations July 19, be challenged by a low ropes course and explore the world of dance at a local studio on July 26. They will also go on a scavenger hunt and take part in a hands-on session at Clay by Design on Aug. 2.

New staff for U.S. Senator
U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe recently announced two new additions to her Washington staff. Barry Walker will serve as a constituent services representative and Lindsey Jewell will take on the role of staff assistant.
Jewell, who is originally from Monticello, did a four-month internship in Sen. Snowe’s Washington office and has worked for the last year in the senator’s Bangor office as a Maine staff assistant. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maine.
Walker is originally from Bangor and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Husson College in May. He was an intern in Sen. Snowe’s Bangor office from January though May.
A medieval summer
The Bangor Public Library is having a medieval summer, one teeming with ideas for reading and activities with a Middle Ages flair. One special event features Professor Gerard NeCastro, of the University of Maine at Machias, who will visit the library at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the library Lecture Hall.
NeCastro is an officer of Medica, an international organization dedicated to the study of medieval medicine.

Scottish bagpipe band
Maine’s premier Bagpipe Band will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at the Bangor Public Library. Sponsored by the Maine St. Andrew’s Society of Maine, an organization that fosters Scottish culture in the state, the band will perform as part of the library’s Summer Concert Series.
The concerts, held in Peirce Park next to the library, are free and will move into the library building in case of inclement weather.

Art exhibits at the library
The summer is sizzling with art exhibits at the Bangor Public Library in July. Bangor artist Rebecca Krupke will present “Behold,” a show of the artist’s oils and prints that explore the “exterior-interior landscapes of homes.” Krupke will be at the opening for her exhibit 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the Library Lecture Hall.
The Stairwell Gallery will be the site for an exhibit of the works of Dixmont artist Brenda Ferguson throughout July. Ferguson’s show, “Expressions,” will feature pastels and pastel-watercolors. An opening will be held in the Stairwell Gallery 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 5. Applications to exhibit at the Bangor Public Library in 2006 are available in the library lobby.
Grant for Head Start
Penquis Community Action Program recently received a $2,000 grant from the Gannett Foundation.
The grant will help Penquis CAP Head Start meet its goal of placing a computer in each preschool classroom.
The Teaching with Technology initiative seeks to give Head Start children in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties access to computers and to train teachers how to use computers as effective teaching tools. The award was made by WLBZ 2 at a ceremony on June 7.
Penquis CAP Head Start, a preschool program for children ages 3 to 5, is registering children for fall 2005. The low- or no-cost program for income-eligible families has been designated a Program of Quality by the state of Maine. For more information, call 973-3537, 973-3567 or the nearest center.
For teens only
Bangor Public Library is offering programs to help teens keep boredom at bay this summer.
As part of the library’s Medieval summer, a Teens Only movie will be shown at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the library.
Book artist Jan Owen will conduct a Teen’s Only calligraphy workshop at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, and a Teens Only session on illumination at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Both workshops are limited to 20 participants. Call 947-8336, Ext. 111, to register.
Another Teens Only movie will be shown at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 19.

Summer art camp
The University of Maine Museum of Art has a few openings left in its art camp for first- and second-graders the week of Aug. 1-5. The camp session meets 8:30 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday and will be taught by Julie Cameron, an art teacher in the Bangor school system. Tuition for the camp is $115 and includes materials. Pancake breakfast
The Bangor Noon Kiwanis Club will hold a pancake breakfast 6-10 a.m. Monday, July 4, at the Brewer Auditorium.
The menu includes strawberries from Tate’s of East Corinth, sausages donated by Dennis Paper and Food Service, and coffee donated by Dunkin Donuts of Brewer. Kiwanis members will do duty as wait staff and cooks. The cost of the breakfast is $4 and $3 for children.
The Bangor region Kiwanis Clubs organize and fund many Fourth of July activities each year. The clubs fund bike and safety programs, camp scholarships, soup kitchens and holiday parties for Head Start programs.

Dinner theater
The Elm Street Congregational Church will present its eighth dinner theater production, “In the Spirit,” at 6 p.m. Friday, July 8, and Sunday, July 10, at the church. Quilting classes
The Old Town Public Library will offer quilting sessions at the library, each lasting two weeks. Session one for 8- and 9-year-olds will meet 3-4:30 p.m. July 7-8 and July 21-22. Session two for 10- and 11-year olds will meet 3-4:30 p.m. July 28-29 and Aug. 4-5. Session three for 12- through 14-year-olds will meet 3-4:30 p.m. Aug. 11-12 and 18-19. All sessions will be held at the library.

Workshop on invasive plants
Invasive plants pose a serious threat to Maine’s lakes, rivers and streams. To help deal with this growing problem, the Maine Center for Invasive Aquatic Plants is developing an Invasive Plant Patrol, an organization of trained volunteers who can help detect offending plants at an early stage, providing the best opportunity for eradication.
The Greater Pushaw Lake Association and University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold a workshop 4-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, in UMaine’s Deering Hall to train those interested in becoming volunteers. The workshop is free and open to all.

Farewell party
The town of Orono gave a farewell party June 29 for Police Chief Bob O’Halloran, who is retiring after two years with the Orono Police Department. Before coming to Orono, O’Halloran, a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, was police chief in Veazie for four years and a patrol lieutenant in the Bangor Police Department for 20 years. He also served as a Maine Drug Enforcement field officer supervisor.
