BANGOR – Osram Sylvania completed its last day of production on Thursday, the company announced. As of today, the facility near the Hogan Road and Interstate 95 is officially closed for business.

The Bangor plant first announced plans in November 2002 to shut down the facility. Approximately 50 remaining employees will be laid off as a result of the closure, while a small crew will remain on site for a number of weeks to complete the facility shutdown.

Osram has been a statewide fixture for more than 50 years, producing lead wires, filaments and other components for fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs at facilities in Bangor as well as Waldoboro, which is also expected to shut down as early as September of this year.

The 42,000-square-foot Bangor facility employed approximately 100 workers at its height.

Employees will be provided with severance compensation and health care continuance. Affected employees also will have access to federal Trade Adjustment Assistance and Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits such as training, re-employment services and health care tax credits.

Osram Sylvania is the North American operation of Osram GmbH of Germany, the second-largest lighting manufacturer in the world and part of Siemens, a diversified international electrical and electronics company. Its U.S. headquarters are in Danvers, Mass.
