Fireworks, bingo to mark Newport Summerfest

NEWPORT – From fireworks and Smokey’s Greater Shows carnival rides to a fishing derby and bingo, the third annual Summerfest has something for everyone.

Teresa Bickford, who is heading this year’s events, said the festival will be held at locations around Newport from Thursday to Saturday.

It will include fireworks, a boat parade, rides and an auction.

The events are sponsored by the Sebasticook Valley Community Center to help raise money for construction of a new building.

The events at the festival and their locations include:

Wednesday, July 6: Smokey’s Greater Shows, 4-9 p.m., waterfront.

Thursday, July 7: Beer-wine tent, alumni lunch wagon sales, 6-10 p.m., waterfront; Smokey’s continues 6-10 p.m.

Friday, July 8: Bracelet day at Smokey’s, beer-wine tent, lunch wagon, 10 a.m.-10 p.m., waterfront; Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce auction, 5 p.m. for viewing, 6 p.m. for bidding, community center.

Saturday, July 9: 8 a.m., registration for canoe race at Darling Farm off Durham Bridge Road; 8 a.m.-noon, Newport Police Department children’s fishing derby at Center Street Bridge; Plymouth Snowmobile Club horseshoe tournament, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at American Legion Hall, waterfront; Kennebec Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited fly-fishing demonstration, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Center Street Bridge; Smokey’s Greater Shows, 10 a.m.-10 p.m., waterfront; Newport Fire Department barbecue, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., community center; bingo bonanza, noon-6 p.m. at the community center; Newport-Pittsfield Kiwanis duck race, noon at North Street Dam; Duster’s Cruise-in antique car show, 4-9 p.m., corner of Route 7 and High Street; Sebasticook Lake Association annual boat parade, 2-5 p.m. at Barrows Point and the waterfront; fireworks, sponsored by the lake association, 8:45-9:45 p.m., over Sebasticook Lake.

Anyone who wants to volunteer with Summerfest can attend a final planning meeting at 6 tonight at the Sebasticook Valley Community Center.
