Circus band concert to benefit music students

The Downeast Center Ring Circus Band Concert, directed by Professor Gene Nichols, is 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Bucksport’s Miles Lane School.

Proceeds benefit music scholarships for students in Hancock, Penobscot and Washington counties.

There is no admission but a $5 donation is suggested.

Last year, $100 scholarships were awarded to more than 23 individuals.

Local musicians will be joined by visiting performers, including retired military band members, and the Sweet Adelines will perform.

Cynthia Carter reports the Charlotte Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary Public Baked Bean Supper is 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at the fire station on Ayes Junction Road.

Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under for the all-you-can-eat event that includes raffle items.

Proceeds benefit the fire department.

Lynn Boulger reminds you The Bay School Summer Auction is 6 p.m. Thursday, July 14, in Emlen Hall at The Bay School, South Street in Blue Hill.

The event benefiting the pre-K-8 school features works by local artists, time at waterfront properties from Castine to Sugarloaf, lobster, jewelry and more.

Admission is free.

Seniors wanting “Extra Help” with applications for Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, Part D, can attend one of two free sessions offered by Eastern Agency on Aging, but preregistration is required.

The sessions, with Fran Lee of the Social Security Administration and EAA staff, are 1-4 p.m. Friday, July 15, and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, July 26, at EAA, 450 Essex St., Bangor.

There is no admission to attend the Hancock County Genealogical Society’s annual fair 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Beechland Road, Ellsworth.

Vicky Blanchette reminds that Living History Days is scheduled 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 16, and Sunday, July 17, at Leonard’s Mills off Route 178 in Bradley.

Admission to step back into the 1790s is $7 for adults, $2 for children 2-12 and free for members.

Country Meadows, an eight-bed residential group home in Bangor, is hosting a yard and bake sale 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 1605 Essex St. in Bangor.

“Our activity budget has recently had a big cut, so we are trying to find ways to raise some extra funds to cover some of our residents’ desired activities this year,” explained rehabilitation coordinator Linda Gamble.

The rain date is the same time and place, Sunday, July 17.

Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Bangor Regional Activity Professionals, a nonprofit association of local activity directors that hosts three events for residents of local facilities: The Sweetheart Dance in May, the Senior Summer Picnic in August and Octoberfest.

Eastern Agency on Aging is seeking four individuals, one each from Hancock, Washington, Penobscot and Piscataquis counties, to serve as a nominating committee.

You must be 60 or older, bring a list of potential candidates for the board of directors and advisory council and attend a one-time meeting, Saturday, July 19, in Bangor.

Board members must be 60 or over and willing to travel to Bangor up to 10 times a year.

Advisory Council members meet quarterly. Mileage reimbursement is available.
