CHATHAM, N.H. – A Maine man was charged with murder and assault Tuesday after a shooting that left a 14-year-old girl dead and a woman wounded.

James Mann, 43, of Fryeburg, Maine, was arraigned on second-degree murder and first-degree assault charges in Conway District Court. He was ordered held without bail for a hearing in two weeks.

Assistant Attorney General David Ruoff said the shootings happened around 10 p.m. Monday in a house in Chatham near the Maine border.

He identified the dead girl as Jasmine Steele and the wounded woman as Linda Miles, in whose house the shootings happened. He said Mann and the victims knew each other but were not related.

The victims were shot in the head.
