Resource for teachers
Primary Source has opened an office at 47 Main St., Bangor, to serve as an administrative center and staging area for the organization’s teacher training programs, as well as a meeting space for consulting activities.
Ryan Bradeen, director of Maine Programs, encourages educators to take advantage of the office’s professional library, consisting of nearly 500 texts, maps and curricular materials on the history and culture of East Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Bradeen worked for Primary Source from a home office in Brewer for the last three years.
Primary Source promotes history and humanities education by connecting educators to peoples and cultures throughout the world and provides seminars, workshops, summer institutes and study tours for K-12 educators.
Primary Source, Bradeen said, has worked closely with the Bangor School Department, helping to shape that district’s impressive China and world studies initiatives. The organization has also worked with educators from 20 Maine school districts including Brewer, Orono, SAD 22 in Hampden, MDI, Blue Hill, Unity, MCI, Messalonski, Windham and Sanford.
Primary Source was born in 1985 at the kitchen table of Anna and Dick Roelofs in their Blue Hill home. As experienced educators, the Roelofs were deeply concerned about how to make social studies curriculum more relevant and engaging. In 1989, Anna Roelofs moved the young nonprofit to Massachusetts. There, the organization’s content focus sharpened and programming expanded. Since then, Primary Source has become a nationally recognized provider of teacher-training and a leader of efforts to strengthen the place of international studies in Massachusetts schools.
The Primary Source Maine Programs office is open 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call Ryan Bradeen, 942 7146 or e-mail at ryan@primarysource.org.
