OLD TOWN – The Old Town-Orono YMCA held its first Youth Triathlon on June 26. Twenty youths participated in the event, the only triathlon in Eastern Maine. Participants ranged in age from 7 to 15.
The triathlon consisted of swimming, biking and running. Swimming took place in the Old Town Community Pool, biking through various streets in Old Town and running at the Old Town High School track.
Each child finished the course and took home awards. Fourteen gift certificates donated by local sponsors were given as prizes.
“The sponsors and volunteers are what made this event such a success,” said Amy Hamlin, YMCA fitness director. “The event was so well-received that we will be doing another youth triathlon next summer. We also have decided to do a family triathlon next summer.”
Sponsors of the triathlon were Road ID, Epic Sports, Ski Rack Sports, Triathlete Store, Rose Bicycle Shop, Saucony Factory Outlet Store, Bugaboo Creek Steak House, Maine Discovery Museum, American Heart Association and Old Town High School.
