BRIDGEWATER – A 5-year-old girl died Thursday morning, six hours after she was struck by a minivan as she pedaled her bicycle across U.S. Route 1.
Police said Megan Bradstreet died on her way to a Bangor hospital after she was initially rushed to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
About 8 p.m. Wednesday, Bradstreet was heading for the family home across Route 1. Her mother, Wendy Bradstreet, 23, had crossed the road ahead of her daughter. The mother was not involved in the collision and was not injured.
Maine State Police Sgt. David McPherson said Megan Bradstreet was wearing a bicycle helmet.
The girl had waited for a northbound tractor-trailer to go by and did not see a southbound minivan. The minivan driver did not see the child because of the tractor-trailer.
“It was kind of a double blind,” McPherson said. “She crossed directly in front of the minivan.”
The girl was struck by the front left side of the minivan. She died of blunt trauma to the head.
Henry Dearborn, 75, of Bridgewater was the driver of the 2002 Dodge minivan. Police said they did not anticipate charges in the incident.
A state police team of six officers, members of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the Presque Isle Police Department assisted primary investigator Trooper Daniel Deschaine at the scene.
State police restricted traffic on Route 1 in the area for about four hours. Traffic was allowed on one lane of the road.
