A Bangor man was arrested Thursday evening for operating while under the influence of intoxicants.
Bangor police were called to a two-car accident at the intersection of Kenduskeag Avenue and Griffin Road just before 10 p.m.
Upon arriving, a firefighter from the Bangor Fire Department, whose Station 5 is located near the intersection, told Officer James Hassard that the man driving the car that rear-ended the other vehicle admitted to drinking a couple of beers, a police report said.
Kenny Hicks, 23, said the car in front of him “slammed on its brakes” and he could not stop in time. The operator of the first car, Russell Coffey, 60, of Bangor, said he had a green light and stopped to wait for oncoming traffic before he made his left turn onto Griffin Road, the report said.
Hicks admitted to Hassard that he had had two beers. It was reported that his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet.
After the completion of sobriety tests, Hassard turned over control of the accident scene to another officer and took Hicks to the police station for a breathalyzer test.
While in the breathalyzer room, Hicks commented to himself that he couldn’t walk well in his new shoes and that was why he didn’t do well on the walk-and-turn test.
Hicks had a blood alcohol content of 0.20 percent and was issued a summons for OUI.
No injuries were reported in the accident.
