Guam has become the second team to earn a trip to the 2005 Senior League World Series, defeating the Philippines 12-3 on Thursday to win the Asia-Pacific regional championship at Tinian, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Guam joins Santiago Veraguas, Panama, as the first entries in the 10-team international tournament, to be held Aug. 14-20 at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor. The Panamanian team won the Latin American championship last Sunday.
Guam, which last played in the Senior League World Series in 2003, went undefeated in four games to win the Asia-Pacific title. The island team defeated defending champion CNMI 14-4, Hong Kong 4-3 and the Philippines 15-3 in pool play, then defeated the Philippines again in the championship game.
CNMI went 2-2 during its stay in Bangor last year, while Guam went winless in four games during the 2003 tournament.
